Do Schools Kill Creativity
Revisiting the First TED Talk
Do you remember when TED Talks were new? Seriously, doesn’t it feel like they’ve always been here now?
One of the first ones I encountered was Sir Ken Robinson’s “Do Schools Kill Creativity?”
This was, and still is, a profound thing. I find it to be continually unusual that creativity is proposed as a lost art. I remember reading articles on the business case for creativity when I worked at Harvard Business Publishing — What has happened to us that we would suddenly see creativity isn’t with us and that it has been important all along?
In this talk, Sir Ken:
- Is hilarious
- Is right
Re-listening to it, this quote struck me as if from the past:
“If you’re not prepared to be wrong you’ll never come up with anything original”
The influence of this has shown in me through understanding how I learn. My own personal mode of learning anything is itself a creative process that ensures I will be able to learn the next thing needed for my future.
It is important to understand creativity as a form of fearlessness; it has its roots in courage and blooms as self-compassion.
More soon,
Trevor
