The Internet Is Your Friend

Study with Me

In the steeps of loneliness after moving to Boston and before finding a job, I found myself loving the internet much more than ever before in my life. I actually had a favorite blogger (??) and actually enjoyed, unto tears of laughter, reaction videos and unboxing videos (?!?!).

Did you know, right now, you can YouTube “study with me” and find thousands of hours of content. Really process this here: there is a genre of media out there where someone will take their camera to a library, and they record themselves reading, taking notes, or writing for 3 hours.

It is odd.

It was a moment when I realized that the internet is its own culture, but, what is even stranger is that it felt good.

Having no friends, I found myself ready to try this out. I put on a video, got to work, and would heck in from time to time on this video as if they were a buddy. And there we were, just two cools kids on the internet doing computer stuff.

Eventually, I forgot she was there. I had stopped for a full lunch break and respond to text messages from a month before (I’m sorry; I don’t know why I’m like this), and she was still going at it, doing a little workbook with lemonade.

I write this to offer a serious but simple question: what world is this?

It isn’t the actual relationship; it is the impression of relation. It isn’t the actual presence; it is the impression of presence.

The truly complex thing is that it almost feels better, and I am afraid of that.

More soon,

Trevor
