The Philosopher’s Epiphany

What could be more thoughtful / pensive / brooding than coffee in the rain?

We find our philosopher doing what philosophers do: reflecting in quietude. He is somewhere. A cafe or restaurant.

He is dressed up in fact, he looks very handsome. Nice beard and mustache and everything. Why is he dressed like this? We don’t know. Maybe he is going somewhere, or maybe he is coming back from something? Maybe he just likes it? This commercial is apparently called “Dinner.” Did he just eat alone? Is this taking place after dinner?

The activity of philosophy is such that it appears boring. The expression “life of the mind” highlights where the real excitement is for one who is pensive and consistently “thoughtful.” What can be done to make this interesting? The metaphor is the rain, for that is how we see the work of the philosopher appear.

The philosopher is there in his window seat, well dressed. His gaze is perhaps of dejection or memory or pursuit. The scene shows his work in all angles and then suddenly, as it is with epiphany, the rain stops. Clarity arrives at last. The cozzy mood of thought is dispelled, and the hero can return to his plan: thinking more elsewhere.

Full of joy, he flicks his little glass of water (I have never known anyone to do this), perhaps from an after-dinner espresso.

The world around him is now crisp and fresh from the rain. He exits his thoughts to find a vivid world.

His shoes sound like money as they somehow “click” in each step to the car. He sits in his car. This whole time, the philosopher has said nothing. As the roof opens, he gives his only line: “‘ere we go.” Intriguing music plays, and he takes back to the night road.

More soon,

Trevor
